Embracing the Golden Glow: Summer Solstice and Midsummer Magic in Devon

As the longest day of the year unfurls its glorious embrace, there’s a palpable shift in the air. As the wheel turns, the Summer Solstice fully immerses us in the vibrant heart of Midsummer. For me, this time of year is an unparalleled source of joy and inspiration, a true feast for the senses.

My studio, nestled in the folds of this beautiful Devon landscape, becomes a haven of creative alchemy during these radiant months. The sunlight, long and lingering, seems to infuse everything and evenings can be spent walking through the fields and along the hedgerows. Met with a kaleidoscope of colours – the fiery oranges of poppies, the cheerful whites of ox-eye daisies, and the myriad purples and pinks of wild campions and foxgloves. It’s a symphony of blooms, a vibrant tapestry that seems to ripple and dance in the gentle summer breeze.

Midsummer isn’t just about the visual spectacle, though. It’s about the feeling – that sense of abundant life, the optimistic hum of nature at its peak. The air thrums with the perfume of countless blossoms, the chorus of swifts fills the long evenings. With painting I’m trying to translate that feeling, that deep connection to the earth and the joyous energy that permeates everything.

In these times of great unrest and uncertainty across the globe, it can feel particularly challenging to hold onto a sense of peace. Yet, it is precisely in moments like these that the quiet, unwavering beauty of nature becomes even more vital. The Summer Solstice, is steeped in ancient traditions that celebrate the sun’s power and the rhythms of life. It’s a time to pause, appreciate the natural world, and reconnect with that innate sense of wonder. In a world that often feels chaotic and overwhelming, this bountiful time of year reminds us to recognise the love, joy, and a current of hope.
