A Mothers Touch

With the gentle lull into early Spring comes much to look forward to, and though the hedgerows are still sparse, tentatively new buds are emerging and lambs are being born, dotting the green fields with their playful energy. The velvet unfurling willow buds, soft and promising, and the yellow hazes of catkins, dusting the bare branches with a touch of gold, provide a great solace after the long, quiet months. Though there’s no denying February’s lingering hard hands, a reminder of winter’s grip, daffodils and snowdrops, those brave heralds of spring, are blinking on the verges, pushing through the cold earth with their delicate beauty. Seeing these first signs of new life, my mind naturally turns to the approach of Mothering Sunday, a time for reflection and gratitude.
My attention is drawn to the profound and tender magic of matriarchal love. It’s a love woven into the very fabric of our being, a gentle strength that shapes us, nurtures us, and guides us through life’s unfolding tapestry. Just as the Devon landscape inspires my creativity, so too does the enduring strength and tenderness of the women who have graced my life.
This Mother’s Day, let us honour the mothers, friends, grandmothers, sisters, aunts, and mentors who have poured their love into our lives, nurturing our dreams and whispering words of encouragement when we needed them most. Let us celebrate their resilience, their wisdom, and the quiet power of their unwavering love.
In my own work, I strive to capture the essence of these precious bonds – so like the joyous blooms of spring let us celebrate the extraordinary women who nurture, inspire, and guide us. And give gratitude to mother earths love, a constant, a warm embrace that sees us through life’s joys and sorrows.
So as Spring awakens, and so do Open Studios! I’m so excited for my extra special events this May and June, a celebration of colour, light, and the joy of new beginnings.
